Lysistrata Post #3: Language of the Spartans??

Why was the Spartans speaking the way they were? I found it kinda difficult to fully understand what they were saying and I thought it misrepresented to a certain extent. If I recall correctly, then the Spartans were not considered as intelligent as the Athenians. They were very barbaric but very good military strategists. Everything else about the Spartans was sub-par. However, they were not stupid. Also, in my opinion, this brings the idea that everyone from the south speaks this way and is somewhat less-intelligent. Idk if this is just me noticing this but it kinda bothered me.

I agree. Giving the Spartans a dialect that represents how the Athenians were prejudiced towards them really throws off the idea that the Athenians and Spartans have created peace.

I agree as well. I thought it was kinda sad how they portrayed the Spartans as uneducated, ill-mannered people. Its almost like Aristophanes wanted to establish some type of social status and he wanted to make the Athenians seem liek they were superior. It was also kind of disappointing for me bcuz I was expecting the play to be original but i think giving the Spartans a southern, country- bumpkin accent really took away from it...supsupsup!

I agree. It was difficult to read, and it sorta reminds me off "Their' eyes were watching God", were the dialect was a bit difficult to read. Nice job!
